Dear ASCA users, A TOO observation of GRB970828 was installed in the span of Aug. 29 21:40 (UT) to Aug. 30 20:20 (UT). The observation of PKS 420-01, which was in the span was shifted to Aug. 31 and the 60 ksec observation of UW CrB (PI: K. Mukai, Pri-C) was reduced to 30 ksec exposure. This ASCA TOO observation of GBD was made under collaboration between RXTE and ASCA (see note below the schedule) on the follow-up observation of the X-ray afterglow and further refinement GBD position that was confined by RXTE. From this observation about one day after the burst, ASCA detected X-ray afterglow (see IAUC 6729). Futher details will be reported soon in the second IAUC. F. JPN: Japan time, US: US time, JUS: Japan-US Collaboration, USJ: US-Japan Collaboration, MJU: Merged Japan-US (PPI=Japan), MUJ: Merged US-Japan (PPI=US), ESJ: ESA-Japan Program, MOT: Manager's observatory time (Calibration and maintenance) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASCA/RXTE collaboration for X-ray afterglow observations of gamma-ray bursts ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- We have agreed to perform ASCA TOO observations for the bursts triggered by BATSE and confined position with RXTE under the collaboration between RXTE and ASCA teams. Therefore, no personal proposal is required for such events. The baseline of the collaboration is as follow: (1) RXTE and ASCA teams establish a collaboration on the TOO observations to measure X-ray afterglows as early as possible and to confine the position as accurate as possible so as for the optical observers to make follow-up observations of optical afterglows. (2) The task team consists of F. Marshall, T. Takeshima, R. Corbet, from RXTE side and T. Murakami, A. Yoshida, N. Kawai and some others from ASCA team, and the task team is lead in collaboration by F. Marshall and T. Murakami. (3) The task team is responsible to evaluate the feasibility, to make a quick observation planning, to care observations and to perform quick analysis of the observations and finally to release the results as early as possible to the world astronomers, on behalf of the RXTE/BATSE and ASCA teams. The results attained will be released to astronomers through Bacodine (GCN) network for preliminary results and through IAU Circular. (4) All data of the ASCA TOO observations on this collaboration are made public as early as possible in a manner similar with the ASCA calibration data. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
