HEA > ASCA > Scientific Results > Supernova remnant Cas A
X-ray image and energy spectrum of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A obtained by ASCA. The soft (bottom-left) and hard(upper-right) X-ray images are superimposed on the energy spectrum averaged over the whole remnant.
K alpha lines from hydrogen-like and helium-like ions of Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe are visible in the spectrum, suggesting thermal emission from a hot plasma.
The bright regions are different in the soft and hard images,
which indicates that the plasma temperature is different in the
region of the supernova remnant.
